Barrington Police bust 'major' identity theft, fraud operation

Monday, September 13, 2004 - Great Barrington Police have arrested a Laconia, N.H., couple in connection with what local officials are characterizing as a "major" identity theft and credit card fraud operation that struck businesses in three New England states.

Police Chief William R. Walsh Jr. announced on Monday that Troy Gay, 38, is presently being held in the Hampden County jail on a fugitive from justice warrant. Walsh said that charges are pending against Gay from at least 21 communities in Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire, as well as various state police jurisdictions and the U.S. Attorney's office.

A second suspect, Rebekah Emerson, 31, is free on bail after she was arraigned Friday morning on several motor vehicle violations. Walsh said Emerson is also facing multiple charges pending further investigation.

The couple allegedly have spent at least the last three months stealing credit cards in various communities and using them to purchase goods in excess of $30,000. According to Great Barrington Police Investigator Edward Scarbro, however, that sum is "the tip of the iceberg."

The suspects were arrested Thursday after they were observed engaging in suspicious activity outside McTeigue and McClelland Jewelers on South Main St in Great Barrington.
